Network of Mountain Biking Trails

The region, in close collaboration with the Province of Overijssel, the municipalities in Twente and Salland, MTB associations and landowners and managers, is developing a continuous mountain biking route network in the area.

Sallandse Heuvelrug Mountain Biking Trail
Two mountain bike trails run through the Sallandse Heuvelrug (one around Hellendoorn and one around Nijverdal). Following these off-road trails, you will be able to enjoy a beautiful, varied landscape with big climbs and long descents (for Dutch standards, that is). You will cycle through forests, across moorland and over many hills.

The blue trail goes through the Holterberg, runs over the Sprengenberg and the Nijverdalseberg and ends in Holten. Halfway through, it is possible to cut across to the Bergweg. From there, you can ride from Haarle to Rijssen and back to Holten. This is a 25 km trail. You can also return to Holten from the road to Raalte/Nijverdal. This is a 30 km distance. Click here for the trail map of the Holten blue trail.

The purple trail traverses the north of the Sallandse Heuvelrug and crosses the Hellendoornseberg. This route can be taken as an extension to the blue trail. The purple trail is 18 km long. It can be quite a tough trail, especially after it has been raining! The differences in height along the purple trail add up to about 300 meters. Along the blue trail only (30 km) they add up to about 185 meters. Click here for the trail map of the Hellendoorn purple trail.

Twente network of mountain biking trails
The network of mountain biking trails in Twente consists of 20 different routes. These routes add up to a total length of over 700 kilometers. The trails run through the impressive Twente scenery with its beautiful bocage, forests, hills, and ancient wooded banks. Every route has several challenging single tracks. These range from a few hundred meters to several kilometers in length and are available to mountain bikers of all levels. Some trails also include technical trail features. These are artificial obstacles, meant for the more skilled mountain bikers.

Salland network of mountain biking trails
The Sallandse Heuvelrug trail is included in the Salland network of mountain biking trails. The other trails included in this network are:

  • Wechelerveld trail (approx. 5 km): The longest single-track trail in the Netherlands. At almost 5 km, this technical trail runs through an old military terrain and a former dumping ground. This makes it a perfect trail for training sessions.
  • Oostermaet trail (approx. 30 km): This trail runs through the oldest woodland in the area via dirt roads, former agricultural fields and challenging single-track segments.
  • IJsselland trail (approx. 30 km): This trail contains a lot of single- track paths through the woods and the estates around the city of Deventer.
  • Salland trail (approx. 34 km): This trail crosses Salland, with its beautiful bocage, right through its centre, and continues along the Overijssel canal. The trail is connected to the MTB trails in the Sallandse Heuvelrug, the Veluwe and the Achterhoek through connective routes.

This network of mountain biking trails provides MTB enthusiasts with an array of beautiful and varied trails which give access to the astonishing Salland country. The available single tracks will give them the opportunity to test their technical ability.
